Tourism leads SA’s economic comeback
After a tough time with global economic pressure, South Africa is bouncing back, and guess what’s leading the charge? Our amazing tourism sector! Tourism is helping South Africa recover economically. It creates new opportunities and supports both people and the planet
In 2024, we welcomed over 10 million international visitors, 28% more than the previous year. These visitors spent and injected billions into our economy, helping hotels, transport, tourist spots, and shops. Tourism is important to South Africa’s economy, contributing 8.8% to GDP in 2024. Experts anticipate further growth in 2025.
Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, says, “tourism is more than just about leisure; it is a lifeline for millions of South Africans.
“From small townships to major cities, tourism-related activities empower local entrepreneurs, support cultural heritage, and create jobs in every province,” she added.
A sector full of opportunities
Renee Hill, MD of the IIE School of Hospitality & Service Management (IIEHSM) concurs.
“The tourism industry currently sustains over 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs across the country, making it one of South Africa’s most accessible employment sectors.”
“Our unique natural landscapes, vibrant cultural experiences, and warm hospitality remain powerful draw cards in a highly competitive global market. With global tourism trends favouring authentic, sustainable travel, the country is well-positioned to benefit from a new wave of environmentally and socially conscious travellers.”
That’s why these courses are so important for anyone looking to build a career in the tourism industry.
Says Hill: “The government’s continued investment in infrastructure, training and destination marketing is expected to generate an additional 500,000 jobs by 2030 and we at IIEHSM want to ensure we are producing graduates who will be well equipped to take up any of those roles that will become available over the next five years.”
