More than a decade after an Afrikaans production last graced the stage of the Teatro at Montecasino, Semi-Soet – Die Musiekblyspel has arrived with all the charm, romance and larger-than-life energy fans could have hoped for.
The musical officially opened this past weekend, drawing more than 7,500 theatre lovers through the doors of the iconic venue. Starring Bobby van Jaarsveld and Anel Alexander in the lead roles, the production has already established itself as one of the biggest Afrikaans theatre events of the year.

Opening weekend attracted a mix of first-time viewers and devoted fans eager to relive the beloved story in a brand-new format. The red-carpet atmosphere was further elevated by the presence of several familiar faces, including Elandré, Bernice West, Karlien van Jaarsveld, Simoné Pretorius and former Springbok captain Victor Matfield.
The response from audiences and critics alike has been overwhelmingly positive.
Internet personality and teacher Lerisha Storm described the production as “1,000 out of 10”, while singer Emil Paul praised it as a must-see theatrical experience.
Broadcaster Michael Abrahamson highlighted the production’s layered storytelling, noting how multiple love stories intertwine with the competitive world of business, supported by an original musical score that allows the cast to showcase both their acting and dancing talents.

According to Salet Smith, AfriForum Theatre Manager, the success of the opening weekend demonstrates the continued appetite for Afrikaans productions on major stages.
“The success of the opening weekend once again confirms that there is a strong demand for Afrikaans theatre on major stages. Every ticket purchased helps secure the future of Afrikaans musicals,” she said.
With ticket sales continuing to surge and some performances already reaching 90% capacity, audiences are being encouraged to book sooner rather than later.
