For four decades, Absa L’Atelier Art has done more than recognise artistic talent. It has helped launch careers, elevate emerging voices and create opportunities for African artists. The platform has also created spaces where artists can share their stories with audiences across the continent and beyond.

Forty Doors Absa L’Atelier
Established in 1986 through a partnership between Absa and the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), Absa L’Atelier Art has grown into one of Africa’s most respected visual arts platforms. It offers mentorship, professional development, international residencies and exhibition opportunities. These initiatives help emerging artists build sustainable careers.
This year marks a significant milestone for the programme. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Absa L’Atelier Art has expanded its calendar with exhibitions, cultural events and educational initiatives. Together, these activities reflect the platform’s continued investment in Africa’s creative future.

The celebrations began with the Forty Doors Absa L’Atelier Art Legacy Event, held on 12 September at Nine Yards in Johannesburg. The event showcased artworks inspired by African heritage, indigenous traditions and contemporary culture. It also highlighted the role Absa L’Atelier Art has played in opening doors for artists over the past four decades.
Today, the platform extends far beyond the annual competition. It has evolved into a cultural movement that connects audiences with African art, creativity and urban culture. Through exhibitions, lifestyle events and educational programmes, it continues to strengthen the continent’s creative ecosystem.

One of the biggest highlights on the calendar is the Absa L’Atelier Art and Lifestyle Fair, which returns to Waterfall City Park in Midrand on 10 October 2026. The annual event combines contemporary Pan-African visual art with live music, food experiences and family-friendly activities. Interactive workshops also encourage visitors to engage directly with creativity.
As part of the fair, the competition’s top continental finalists will exhibit their work. Judges will also announce the winners of the prestigious Absa L’Atelier Art Ambassador and Gerard Sekoto Award titles.

Recipients receive career-shaping opportunities. These include mentorship, international residencies and support for future solo exhibitions. Winners may also access up to R100,000 in material funding to help bring their projects to life.
