The beloved Bedfordview landmark is being transformed into a vibrant destination for food, culture, family and community. For decades, Gillooly’s Farm has been a favourite escape for Gauteng residents seeking a breath of fresh air, a peaceful walk or a family picnic surrounded by nature. Now, the iconic Bedfordview landmark is entering an exciting new chapter as it evolves into Gillooly’s Gardens.
The ambitious restoration project aims to preserve everything visitors have loved about the space while introducing new experiences centred around food, culture, recreation and community connection.

Gillooly’s Garden
At the heart of the transformation is a commitment to maintaining Gillooly’s Gardens as a safe, welcoming and accessible public space. Rather than replacing the park’s natural character, the vision is to enhance it, ensuring future generations can continue enjoying one of Johannesburg’s most treasured green spaces.
A major feature of the redevelopment is Gather, a family-friendly restaurant curated by Coco & J, designed to bring people together through great food and warm hospitality. The dining experience will form part of a broader lifestyle destination that includes walking trails, gardens, family activities, community events and the popular Good Stuff Market.

Music and culture will also play a key role in the new Gillooly’s experience, with live performances planned for later this year. Details on artists and event dates are expected to be announced in the coming months.
Gillooly’s history stretches back more than 80 years. Originally owned by James Gillooly, the 44-hectare property was acquired by the city council in 1944 and named in his honour. Over the years, its lake, birdlife, picnic areas and open lawns have made it a cherished destination for residents across Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.

Art Spaces Come Alive at Gillooy’s Gardens
Leading the next phase of the park are hospitality and events professionals with experience behind some of South Africa’s most celebrated lifestyle destinations, including Artistry, Katy’s Palace Bar, Sir James Van Der Merwe Bar, The Ivy, Obscura and The Ostrich in Cape Town.
Adding a personal touch to the project is the involvement of Coco and J’Something, whose passion for food, family and community aligns naturally with the vision for Gillooly’s Gardens. “We want to create a space that brings people together,” the couple explained. “A space that celebrates good food, good people, community and connection. A space that feels like home.”
More than a redevelopment, Gillooly’s Gardens represents a renewed commitment to creating a place where nature, culture and community can thrive together. And if the vision comes to life as planned, Johannesburg may soon have a new favourite gathering place.
